After racing conservatively over the first half of the course, looking after bodies and gear, the team started the final 25km trek together with team painted wolf. The leg proved significantly tougher than had been expected with the heat and lack of water having a significant impact as the teams battled through harsh vynbos covered ridges. The lead changed continually with neither team managing to open any substantial gap and spending a fair amount of time together traversing the ridgeline. It finally came down to an “end sprint” over the final 5km of dirt roads into the finish. An intense and fun final 30mins for both teams.
A massive well done and huge thanks for Alfred Thorpe and the WCAD team for organising a fantastic event and challenging route.
We already looking forward to the next A1 race on the long weekend of the 15-17 June at Gariep Dam, hosted by Adrian Saffy.
