Thirty one, 4 people teams will line up in the northern Drakensberg on the 7 May for South Africa’s Adventure Racing World Series event. The event has attracted huge interest from across the globe, with 11 international teams entered. Team MERRELL have won both previous editions of Expedition Africa and have again set the top step as their goal.
With team captain and navigator, Graham Bird, out of action for the first quarter of this year and the teams racing hobbit, Tatum Prins, beginning her journey with motherhood, it will be a new look team that lines up in May. South African Mountain biking legend, Yolande de Villiers, has taken up the challenge of AR and will join the team, with the search for the replacement navigator still continuing.
Team MERRELL head to Central Districts next week for the 250km DOUBLE MOON, as part of their preparations. This will give the new look team a chance to build on their dynamics and gain some much needed race time together. The race will the also allow the team to gain a better understanding of Stephan and Heidi Muller’s style, organisers of the Expedition Africa. This could prove invaluable come 7th May.
DOUBLE MOON is being staged in the area surrounding Allemanskraal Dam and Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve and will include approximately 50% mountain biking, 30% trekking/running and 20% paddling in the Non stop 250km race. The race gets underway at 07h00 on Friday 22 February.
